Sherman, TX

Computer image of single tooth implant from HomeTown Dental at Sherman in Sherman, TXA lot of people see tooth loss as serious business. In fact, they are ashamed that they have lost teeth. We want to let you know that we don’t see tooth loss the same way you do, and that’s because we see tooth loss all the time. In fact, we’re here to tell you that most people lose at least one tooth by the time that they are 21 years old. If you lose a tooth at that young age, it’s usually because you had tooth decay, or you had trauma to your mouth. You may also have had a wisdom tooth removed. If you have lost one tooth, you shouldn’t stress about it if you are 20 years old, especially if it is one of your back molars. By the time you reach middle age, over 70% of adults have lost more than one tooth because of tooth decay or gum disease.Over 25% of American adults have lost all of their teeth by the time they are 75 years old. We are telling you all of this to say that tooth loss is very common. Fortunately, at HomeTown Dental at Sherman we offer dental implants to replace your missing teeth, so you do not need to suffer with tooth loss any longer.

Do I Need to Replace My Missing Teeth?

Just like your regular bones need regular physical activity to stay strong, your jawbone is no different. However, unlike your normal bones (which get exercise from working out), your jawbone gets it from chewing and biting motions. When a tooth is missing, the jaw area where it belonged slowly gets absorbed back into the body, as the lack of “exercise” tells it that the bone itself is no longer necessary.

Jaw resorption heavily shrinks the size of your jawbone, which makes your chin start to recede around your nose and your lips. Not only can this weaken the bone, but it can also create several wrinkles around the area and saggy skin in the cheeks. When this happens, the gum becomes thinner and recesses, making the teeth unstable. The exposed gum where you lost a tooth is then more susceptible to disease.

Dental Implants Help Strengthen Your Jawbone

Dental implants offer the best solution to preventing jawbone resorption. They include a titanium base, which adheres to your jawbone and provides enough pressure for it to remain strong and healthy. The surgery normally takes three stages, where the implant screw will be first placed deep into your jawbone. Then the abutment will be surgically placed in the jaw, but only after your mouth heals and the bone properly fuses with the screw. Finally, the artificial crown will be placed. If your jawbone is not strong enough to support the implant, a bone graft may be required beforehand to strengthen the surgical site.
